Individual Psychotherapy
This is where most people begin when they want to address a difficulty in their life. Asking for help is not always easy, and I appreciate you taking the step to look into this option. You may be wanting therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, grief, and/or healing from a traumatic experience. Perhaps you feel stuck spiritually or in your relationships and want help figuring out what’s going on and what to do about it. You may be a college or graduate student working to develop your identity as you learn new things about the world. Or you might be a new parent, overwhelmed with such a significant change to your life and wanting to be the best parent you can. At any stage of life, you may also be wanting to figure out why some (or most) relationships haven’t worked well for you, and what can be done to help you have a better experience.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
I practice depth-oriented/psychodynamic psychotherapy, largely informed by attachment theory and relational psychoanalytic thinking. I have found this approach successful with a wide range of topics and people, and what I appreciate most about it is the richness of the work and the deep level of change people experience. Even though the people I work with vary, as well as the topics they want to address in therapy, what remains consistent is the value of building a trusting, therapeutic relationship in which you can bring what feels like the darkest, most painful, and/or the “unacceptable” parts of you to our work. This is where change really happens - when you and I are able to talk about the untalkable, feel the unfeelable, and get to know the parts of you that have not been allowed to be known. This is what helps you heal, have more sense of being a “whole” person, and experience more success in your relationships, work, and life. For some, this happens more quickly. For others, we take our time. There is no expectation or rule. I am here to walk with you on your journey, help you understand the barriers or challenges you have faced and what you need to overcome them, and then help you translate that into your daily life.
Hypnotherapy
In addition to the traditional psychotherapy, I am also experienced in using clinical hypnosis as a tool to enhance your healing and growth. This is not the theatrical hypnosis you might have seen at a county fair - at no time has a patient been clucking like a chicken in my office. Rather, this is a collaborative exercise and you are in control of yourself and your mind the entire time. Hypnosis is a tool that teaches you how to use the power of suggestions to effect the change you want to see. It often feels like guided meditation; the difference is that I teach you how to create and use suggestions that help you get the results you want. I have found this to be particularly effective in working with anxiety, as well as depression, chronic pain, insomnia, and traumatic experiences. If you’d like to read more about clinical hypnosis, the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis has some helpful resources. I’m also happy to answer any questions.
